I have too many portable gadgets, which results in lots of little adapter cables, power cables and gak that is getting impossible to keep track of. Between my Ipod, Clie, Etrex Vista GPS, Laptop, digital camera, and whatever else I have, dragging this stuff around is a pain. On long trips I have the GPS suction cupped to the window, Ipod pumping out tunes to the stereo, laptop trying to pick up a WiFi Hotspot and my cell phone on constant charge because of roaming, my car is a mess.

The car computer is the best solution, it will allow me to get rid of most of my gadgets in my car. In addition, it will allow me to expand on the features I already have, such as point to point directions.

Goals:

To install a car computer to perform the following tasks

  • Play MP3s off hard-drive

  • Play CDs

  • FM Tuning via USB, allowing me to remove Head Unit

  • Do GPS Navigation

  • Play DVDs for passengers

  • Allow me to stop and check email at hotspots when traveling

  • File transfer between work and home

Future features may include

  • OBDII Interface to car's computer

  • Interface via BasicX for internal & external temperatures

  • Full AI interface to compete in DARPA's Grand Challenge and win a million bucks.

Key Goal: All modifications to the vehicle will be minimized and done cleanly.  I'll try to take great care with external and internal appearance of everything I build. When its done, I want it to look like it came that way from the factory. It's not too difficult to stuff a computer in a car, but the devil is in the details. Everything installed must match the interior of the car and not look out of place.
